Board of Regents
Congress created the Smithsonian Institution in 1846 as "an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge." The 17-member Board of Regents is responsible for the administration of the Smithsonian. It consists of the Chief Justice of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, three members of the United States Senate, three members of the United States House of Representatives and nine citizens.

Co-chairs
The four Campaign Co-chairs are the volunteer leaders of the Smithsonian Campaign. They oversee the campaign’s fundraising, programming and stewardship; guide the Steering Committee’s work with the Smithsonian’s advisory boards and advancement staff; and inform the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents of campaign progress.

Steering Committee
The all-volunteer Campaign Steering Committee guides the Smithsonian Campaign and helps share it with the nation. Its members represent the advisory boards of the Smithsonian's many museums, research centers and programs. Also serving, as ex-officio members, are the Secretary of the Smithsonian, Chair of the Board of Regents, Chair of the Board of Regents Advancement Committee and Assistant Secretary for Advancement.

The Smithsonian Campaign’s Honorary Committee is a group of some of the greatest living Americans, distinguished citizens who have helped to shape our nation and our times. Committee members reflect the full spectrum of American achievement in technology, politics, sports, the sciences and the arts. The Committee sets the tone for the Smithsonian Campaign and is instrumental in building the campaign’s visibility and success.
