Young Panda Bao Bao Now Receiving Visitors
The live birth of a female panda cub August 23 caused widespread celebration and millions of hits on the National Zoo’s Panda Cam. Her successful birth resulted from years of endangered species research and collaboration at the Zoo and in China. November 30, the young panda received her name: Bao Bao, which translates to precious or treasure in English. Now, at last, the public may see her in person. The National Zoo has opened Bao Bao’s den to the public, although the amount of time she and her mother, Mei Xiang, can be viewed is determined day-by-day by the zoo, based on the behavior of the two.
