The National Museum of African American History and Culture will open on the National Mall in 2015

Oprah Winfrey’s $12 million gift to the National Museum of African American History and Culture is her second to the newest Smithsonian museum, which is scheduled to open in 2015. The museum’s performance space will be named the Oprah Winfrey Theater in recognition of her generosity. The 350-seat theater will be one of the building’s largest spaces and a forum for performers, artists, educators, scholars, authors, musicians, filmmakers and opinion leaders showcasing African American achievement and contributions. Winfrey is a founding member of the museum’s Council. She made a gift of $1 million to the museum in 2007. Her new gift, made through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, is the largest received to-date by the museum.
