The National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition American Cool examines famous Americans who have become cultural icons and define what it means to be “cool” – often through their artistic vision and rebellion against mainstream culture. On view from Feb. 7 through Sept. 7, American Cool features 100 photos of greats including jazz musician Miles Davis, actress Audrey Hepburn and innovator Steve Jobs. Each portrait, too, is a work of art, taken by such notable photographers as Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz,  Diane Arbus and others.
