Panama Unit Names Director

Matthew C. Larsen has been named Director of Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. He joins the Smithsonian on August 11.

Larsen comes to the Smithsonian from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), where he is Associate Director for Climate and Land-use Change. He was previously associate director for water, chief scientist for hydrology, and Caribbean district chief for USGS, and prior to that he worked for more than a decade as a research hydrologist in Puerto Rico. He has extensive experience in climate change scientific research and is a proven leader of large collaborative projects. Concurrent with serving at the USGS, he has chaired the U.S. National Committee for the UNESCO International Hydrological Program and co-chaired the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force Water Resources Workgroup and the Department of the Interior’s Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science. He has a bachelor’s degree in geology from Antioch College and a doctorate in geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He will replace Bill Wcislo, who has served as Acting Director of the Institute since October.
