Dr. David J. Skorton Is 13th Secretary
David J. Skorton begins his tenure as the Smithsonian's13th Secretary today. He arrives from Cornell University, where he was president, a post he held since 2006. Elected by the Board of Regents in March 2014, Skorton is the first physician to lead the Smithsonian. His public installation ceremony will take place on October 19.
Skorton, 65, is a board-certified cardiologist and was a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Weill Cornell Medical College, and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering. Prior to his roles at Cornell, Skorton was president of the University of Iowa from 2003 to 2006. He is an avid musician, playing the flute and saxophone, and advocate for the arts and humanities. He succeeds Secretary Wayne Clough.
